Equinox Reconnection Ceremony and Field Trip: Lachatao, Sierra Norte de Oaxaca, Mexico
Lachatao is an indigenous village in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. As a process of reconnection, the people of Lachatao continue to reclaim their roots, practices, beliefs, and communal pre-Hispanic ways of life—including the importance of ceremony, and observing and celebrating the equinoxes as anchors of time. Hill of the Jaguar (Cerro del Jaguar) is a very important Zapotec archaeological site managed by the community of Lachatao. To this day, the Original Peoples follow in the footsteps of their Zapotec ancestors–walking the same path to the ancient ceremonial site to observe the cosmos, communicate with the ancestors, and make offerings to Mother Earth.
We are very grateful and honored to be invited to participate in a sacred plant medicine ceremony atop Cerro del Jaguar to welcome the spring equinox and celebrate this important cyclical transition with the community. We are also very happy to be able to extend the invitation through this reconnection field trip, during this very special and sacred ancestral celebration for the Zapotec people of Lachatao.
